Some Stuff I Learned While Taking Videos At Lummis Day

by Cheryl Johnson on June 10, 2009

This is some useful stuff I learned while taking videos at Lummis Day last Sunday.

1.  1 gig of SD card memory holds about 10 minutes of video.  Your mileage may vary depending on your equipment, but I figured this was a useful rule of thumb.

2.  If you want to take video of four different musical groups, and each musical group is performing for 30 minutes, have (at least) four 4-gig SD cards.  Put a fresh card into the camera before each different band starts.  Yes, there may be extra space left on each card, which you can use for shooting stills of other stuff inbetween bands.

Starting a fresh memory card for each performer will assure that you don’t run out of memory in the middle of a song.  Uhhmmmm, like this: (oops.)

As wonderful as the young people’s folk dance troops are, let their friends and family shoot those videos.  Put your camera in burst mode and shoot stills instead.  Save your gigabytes for the musical groups.

Mind you, I knew NONE of this Sunday.  But I have now figured it out, and I’m writing it down here, so I’ll be ahead of the game ~next year~.
